Yale Cardiac Surgery encompasses the entire spectrum of available treatment modalities for the diseased heart. Faculty surgeons provide comprehensive adult and pediatric cardiac surgical care. Coronary artery bypass surgery, valve replacements and repairs, pacemaker and defibrillator insertions, left ventricular aneurysmectomy, and thoracic aneurysm repairs are performed by the faculty. Off–pump and minimally invasive approaches are offered when appropriate.

The Yale Center for Thoracic Aortic Disease provides comprehensive management for patients with aneurysms or dissections of the aorta. The heart transplantation and mechanical heart programs provide treatments for end–stage heart failure. The center offers the miniaturized, high–tech Jarvik artificial heart device, among others.

Congenital and acquired cardiothoracic diseases of children for which surgical intervention is indicated are managed by surgeons dedicated to this subspecialty. Atrial and ventricular septal defects and tetralogy of Fallot are examples of such diseases. Damus–Kay–Stansel procedures, shunts, and Fontan, Norwood, coarctation, patent ductus ateriosus, pulmonary artery banding and arterial switch procedures are all performed.

Adult heart transplants are performed for patients with end–stage heart disease.

Special programs are available for distant and overseas patients, including transportation and hotel accommodations.
