Surgical Emergency Program

The Surgical Critical Care Program at Yale – New Haven Hospital manages approximately 2500 patients per year in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit and the Step-Down Unit. All attending physicians are either Board-eligible or Board-certified in Critical Care, and are members of the Department of Surgery or Anesthesiology. The SICU and the Step-Down units contain 14 and 6 beds respectively. Both units are equipped with state of the art life support and monitoring systems. In addition to their clinical activities, our surgical intensivists train three fellows a year, as residents in surgery, anesthesia and emergency medicine, medical students, nurses, and physician assistants.

The Surgical Critical Care Program is available to accept critically ill patients from regional hospitals, and will provide tertiary care and expertise in surgical critical care to the patients of Southern Connecticut.

To transfer a patient to the Surgical Critical Care Program at YNHH, please call 1-800-285-7775.
